How does Darwin do it?

Starting the Wheels

Wheels are sized to scale and cut to a round shape on a band saw. A template, which has been carefully measured for spacing and accuracy, is placed on a round blank for spoke placement (right). Tupelo wood is used for strength and tightness of grain.

The hub assembly is attached to the wheel, and spokes are marked for cut-out on the scroll saw.
